Breath as the first practice

MindfulnessRavi Menon14 July 20264 min read

If you only take one thing home from a wellness stay, take this. It requires nothing, costs nothing, and travels.

Meditation asks for stillness and time. Breath practice asks for neither, which is why we teach it first.

The mechanics are simple enough to explain in a sentence: lengthening the exhale relative to the inhale shifts the body toward rest. You can do it in a meeting, in traffic, or in the ninety seconds before a difficult conversation.

The practice you can do badly, anywhere, beats the practice you can only do perfectly, at home, on a cushion.

Guests who resist seated meditation for years often find that breath practice becomes their way in. Some never go further, and that is entirely fine.
